Birthday Weekender

Saturday was my 26th birthday and today has been spent recovering from the food coma I seem to have put myself in after consuming too much sushi and birthday cake, but I've finally dragged myself away from the tv (Jurrasic Park 2 folks! Perfect Easter Sunday flick!) to write this post.

The morning was spent with Johnny opening my cards and presants in my jammies before he went off to work. My mum and dad bought me a Cookware juicer and Johnny bought me cooking bits and pieces that I'd asked for so that I can finally start baking Vegan cakes and muffins, so happy! After presant-opening, I went to my appointment at Ritz Hair and Beauty on Dundas street to see the lovely Jen for some much needed hair therapy and then met my friend Drew for coffee in town.

After dragging him around the MAC counter (thank you for being so patient Drew, you're a legend!) we nipped along to Zara so he could try on some summer jackets but on the way out, I spied this gorgeous coat. I fell in love with the colour and fit and despite leaving the store without it, it has occupied literally 90% of all my thoughts since trying it on so I may have to give in and just get it because my desire for it is becoming a slight obsession.

Ok so I didn't exactly show complete restraint in Zara because I bought this beautiful pearl choker, which looks almost identical to the chokers from Chanel's SS'14 show. Well, if it's good enough for Chanel, and it's knocked off by Zara so I can actually afford it, it's good enough for me!

I also have to point out here that the only reason I ended up with the Nars concealer is because Drew went upstairs in Harvey Nichols while I paid for my Vanilla pigment and in his absence, I found myself floating over to the Space NK section and before I knew it, the creamy concealer was mine. So your fault Drew, so your fault..

Next up was a browse in River Island where I bought this cute little off-the-shoulder top and decided to wear it with Topshop Leigh Jeans, Topshop cut out boots and the Zara choker for dinner at Bonsai with Johnny. Here's me having a total Sandy from Greece moment.

(I love how Zeus looks like he's just lost the will to live in this picture).

Dinner-Date/Birthday Makeup was a no-holds-barred affair, I really went for it! I applied Laura Mercier's silk creme foundation followed by the Nars concealer under my eyes and on any blemishes. Then I filled in my brows with HD Brow's eyebrow palette in Bombshell, blended a few shades from Urban Decay's Naked 1 palette over my lids and did a cat eye flick. Lastly, I sculpted out my cheekbones with Chanel's Les Beiges in No.10 (which I'm still obsessed with) and some of Chanel's Lumieres Magiques sculpting blusher. Lastly, a little cat eye flick and slick of MUA Cosmetic's Lip Laquer in Reckless and voila!

Bonsai = Om nom nom!

I had such a great birthday! My gifts were amazing, dinner with Johnny was lovely and Drew was an absolute trooper during my mini-shopping spree! Good times.

I also just wanted to mention something that made my day even more special. If you guys follow me on Instagram, you'll know that I'm a huge fan of True Detective and am currently re-watching the first series because the show is just impecabble and is great writing-inspiration for me. If you haven't seen it yet, do go and watch it, it will blow your mind.

I posted this screen capture on Instagram as it's my favourite shot and mentioned that The Handsome Family's Far From Any Road playing during the opening title sequence just sets the perfect tone for the series.

A few hours later, I opened Twitter to see that Rennie had tweeted me wishing me a happy birthday which just totally made my day because I love their music and it was just a really nice thing for her to do. If all you True Detective fans have only listened to (and loved!) Far From Any Road, do have a listen to their other songs and albums, I promise you, you won't be disappointed.

I'm having such an uber fan girl moment here I know but how awesome was that?

All in all my birthday was amazing and I want to thank my parents, Johnny and Drew for making my day extremely special. Thanks guys!

Geluja Candles | Edinburgh, Stockbridge

On my days off I love nothing more than ambling along the road down to Stockbridge for some exploring. It's an area that's always bustling with a sense of local community partly thanks to the dominance of family run businesses, local boutiques, a thriving Sunday market and countless cozy eateries. There are also rows of charity shops, a huge library and a fair few coffee shops making it a perfect place to explore and find some local treasures.

On one such day a few weeks back, I walked past a candle store I had never been in to and decided to investigate. Inside the shop felt serene and the soft glow of candles instantly created an inviting atmosphere. I'm a huge fan of candles and at any given time there are usually a handful burning quietly on various desks and table tops in my house so I really wasn't going to be a hard customer to sell to. However, what struck me about Geluja candles was the abundance of colours, sleek design and the radiating glow each candle gave off. Some of the cube candles had what appeared to be large rock salts nestled in the base and I decided that I simply must know what that was all about.

The shop owner was absolutely lovely, very knowledgeable about her products and she spent a fair bit of time with me, explaining what the salts were for and how to disperse them inside the candle. It turns out it wasn't salt at all but sand and that it was used to protect the wax lantern from internal candle spillage which get's a huge thumbs up from me because one of the downsides of having beautiful candles is the dubious amount of wax that inevitably ends up all over my floor.

I chose one of the large Rose Window wood designs as I thought that it would sit perfectly atop one of my expedits at home.

I'm so pleased with my purchase but what cinched it for me (other than the beautiful quality and design of the candle) was the service. Emmajane, the store owner, was so very lovely and such a warm person and she gave top notch customer service. I highly recommend popping in to the store if you live in the area or alternatively, you can check out their website here.

Hope you're having a fabulous day!
(Side note here; not sure what on earth was going on with the lighting in my house but the candle is completely white, for some reason there is a pink hue in some of the pictures but this isn't reflective of the colour, just of my complete lack of lighting skills when taking pictures. Mental note; research photography lighting...doh!)

vo5 give me texture dry texturising spray, dove hair therapy refresh and go dry shampoo, dr jart plus pore gel, garnier pure avtive moisturizer, bareminerals prime time primer, benefit theyre real mascara mini, review

I used up a fair few products in February as I have been trying finish bottles of products I already own before buying shiny new and enticing ones. Here are February's empties:

Vo5 Give Me Texture Dry Texturising Spray
I love this spray, I really do. I picked it up on a whim a few months ago on a trip to Boots and I'm so glad I did. I have shoulder length hair that has quite a few layers and sometimes I don't want it to sit so flat but I don't have time to curl it either. Solution? A quick spray of the Vo5 dry texturising spray amongst my layers leaves my hair volumized and just the right kind of messy.
Would I repurchase: Already have!
(On a side note, since I buying a new bottle, Vo5 have changed the packaging on their cans and they're so cute! Not sure why that matters to me, but it does! I'm a bit of a "visual consumer," clearly...)

Dove Hair Therapy Dry Shampoo
I picked this up after growing weary of using Batiste's dry shampoos and constantly having to disperse the powdery white residue that would be left on my roots. Dove's dry shampoo leaves no such residue and doesn't have than awful tangy, tropical odour that Batiste's products tend to have. I like this product so much that I've started to use it daily, blasting a small amount under my roots to give some lift to the sides and crown of my hair. Works a treat and there's no questionable residue either.
Would I repurchase? Already have.

Dr Jart+ Pore Refine Clear Away Gel
I think I bought this Dr Jart gel when it was half price at Boots and thank goodness I did because if I'd have paid the original £16.00 price tag, I think I would have been pissed with the results, which were essentially, nothing. I have quite large pores by the sides of my nose and at the very tops of my cheeks and this gel did nothing to 'refine' them or make my skin feel smooth. Similarly so, my skin's texture wasn't improved.
Would I repurchase? No. Did zilch for me.

Garnier Pure Activ Moisturizer
This is my go-to moisturizer for day time makeup because it absorbs quickly, feels light on the skin and doesn't interfere with my liquid foundation. It's hydrating, smells like freshly cut cucumber and one pump of the product is enough for my entire face. I'm on my 6th or 7th bottle of Garnier's Pure Activ moisturizer and the only reason I don't have a bottle at the moment is because I decided to give Garnier's moisture match moisturizers a go.
Would I repurchase? I have many times over.

bareMinerals Prime Time
Love love love this primer. It's so soft and silky on the skin, absorbs quickly and in my opinion, really does help my makeup stay on for the duration of the day. It just feels so luxurious and beautiful when applying to the skin, a little pricey for a bottle but the 60ml bottle lasted me nigh on a year.
Would I repurchase? Absolutely.

Benefit They're Real
Like many ladies out there, I got my free sample of Benefit's They're Real mascara with a magazine (I think it was Marie Claire) but, also like many ladies out there, I was really disappointed with the product. The mascara did lengthen my lashes which was a positive but the formula really itched my sensitive eyes and the wand was too harsh on my lashes, sometimes pulling them out during application.
Would I repurchase? No, which is a shame because the product did work really well to lengthen and volumize my lashes but the cons outweighed the pros when it came to durability and application.

Hope that these mini-reviews have been helpful for you and if you've tried any of the products, do let me know how you got on in the comments!

Ark Clothing | Dungarees and Pinafores

For anyone who consistently reads my blog, you'll know that I love a good transitional piece and when it comes to clothing, I want them, where possible, to work for me and see me through to next season. I love garments that can be transformed through layering or switching up accessories and Ark's selection of dungarees and pinafores do exactly that.

I find pinafores to be the perfect preppy, off-duty ensemble. They are a versatile building block for a seriously customizable look and they omit a sense of youth and playfulness that I think every girl should have in her closet. In Spring/Summer, pair them with a breton tee or crop or dress them up with floral shirts, white shirts, lumberjack shirts, the possibilities are endless (and evidently, so are the shirt options!) In Autumn/Winter, layer with oversized cardigans, textured jumpers, leather jackets or just pop on a trilby or fedora and you're good to go.

The merge of the pinafore with the denim dungaree gives an ultimate throwback to the 90s and paired with cutout boots, the Vintage Mid Blue Dungarees catapults the 90's staple to a modern classic.

These two velvet pinafores have to be my favourites from Ark's selection. Velvet is one of those materials that exudes connotations of opulence and always feels like a dream to wear because of the soft, flowing fabric. I would pair the Black Cliff pinafore dress with a crisp, collared white shirt, a pair of monochrome patent, pointed brogues and a red Cambridge Satchel.

What are your favourites from Ark's Dungaree and Pinafore edit?

Chanel 50% Off Haul | Outfit of the Day

I was lazily wandering around the duty free section of Tenerife South airport a fortnight ago, waiting for my flight home to Scotland, when I glanced over at the Chanel counter and noticed little red stickers above almost every product. Curiosity peaked, I casually strolled over and investigated. I then had a sharp intake of breath, followed by my eyes dilating like something from Requiem For A Dream and I had to carefully contain an inward squeal of delight and keep my shit together because, you know, Chanel girls don't squeal. Almost every Chanel product had 50% off and with the euro prices being cheaper than British pounds, the prices were even more amazing.

It was a slight godsend that I didn't have my credit card on me because I think I would have gone a little mad. But I did pick up the 'Les Beiges' for €23.00, the scultping eyebrow pencil for €9.00 and the lipstick for €11.00, which all came to the equivalent of around £35.00

After keeping them in their beautiful packaging for almost 2 weeks and just lovingly glancing at them, I decided to give them all a try yesterday and here is the look.

The 'Les Beige' smells beautiful, a slight hint of fragrance but not too overpowering. I used it all over my face and contoured a little in my cheeks with the Bodyshop Honey bronzer. The Rouge Coco lipstick looks red in the photos for some reason but when applied it's a lovely purply pink shade that suits my pale skin tone well. As for the brow pencil, sometimes I really can't be bothered spending 10 minutes filling in my eyebrows, shading them in and then concealing all around them, it's a bit of a bore when you need to be out the door quickly, so I bought the pencil just to fill in my brows quickly but give a more natural effect. The pencil comes with a spoolie on one and it literally took my 30 seconds to fill in each brow and feather them with the spoolie. I really like the more natural finish and the pencil comes with an adorable Chanel pencil sharpener, which is just so chic. Can sharpener's be chic? Well yes, I suppose they can when they have two interlocked C's emblazoned on the front!

My outfit yesterday was this beautiful monochrome peter pan collar dress my mum got for me a few months ago. It's actually down to £20.00 now in River Island stores but I absolutely love it, the shape and the length really work well for my height and I paired it with some leather BCBG heels and a studded Primark clutch.

My mum is going to be back at the airport when she goes away skiing at the end of March and I'm already skimming through websites, looking for other Chanel cosmetics I can sweetly ask her to pick up for me. Because at 50% off, I'm pretty sure Coco herself would find me rude if I didn't extend my collection.

I recently went home to Tenerife to see my family and when my mum told me that we were going to head up North for a day of girly shopping, I could hardly contain my excitement. We went to The Centro Commercial Santa Maria del Mar in Santa Cruz and the store that I made a complete bee-line to was Zara.

Zara in Tenerife is so much cheaper than here in the UK and I'm not sure if that's because Zara is a Spanish company or if it's because the exchange rate is just truly that awful but the prices in store were amazing. My mum picked me up two coats (including the one photographed), the beautiful mini city bag (that I've been lusting over for literally months), jeans, cigarette trousers and a jumper or two. The sale was still on as well which was an absolute bonus and many of the items we purchased had incredible mark downs.

The great thing about going shopping with my mum is that she gets so excited for me, like, literally throwing clothes at me to try because she wants to see what they look like on. Mother, you are a true shopper and for that, I salute you, you have taught me well.

When I picked up three coats to try and selected two to purchase, she seemed a little confused and wondered why I had such an obsession with coats. I explained that unfortunately in Scotland, where the weather is bitter and makes your nose display a consistent Rudolf hue, coats are an integral part, if not the 'centrepiece' if you will, of an outfit because we hardly take them off. Sometimes I don't even care what jumper I throw on underneath because I know that my coat isn't going to be removed from my shoulders at all that day so the coat has to be perfect. It's the ultimate fashion accessory to Scottish dwellers and that's why my collection is so diverse.

In summary, one can never have too many coats.
